Israel says it has killed a Hamas commander who was involved in holding seven Israeli hostages in an underground tunnel in the Gaza City area during the war. The IDF identified the commander as Mahmoud Abd al-Fattah Awad, saying he took part in holding Daniella Gilboa, Karina Ariev, Doron Steinbrecher, Naama Levy, Ziv Berman, Omri Miran and Eitan Mor captive. Awad was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza City area over the weekend, according to the Israeli military. The IDF further alleged that Awad had recently been involved in planning and advancing attacks against Israeli troops and civilians and was working to restore Hamas’s operational capabilities despite the ceasefire. Israel says it has killed Muhammad Abu Alwan, whom the IDF and Shin Bet identified as the head of Hamas’s Finance Department, in a joint operation in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said the operation targeted Hamas’s financial network. Katz said Israel would continue targeting Hamas commanders, operatives and financial infrastructure while seeking to prevent the group from rebuilding its capabilities.
