A devastating disaster along the Nepal-Tibet border has left more than 620 people dead and around 3,000 missing, as rescuers continue sea. The Gyirong border post was destroyed by a massive mudslide, while floodwaters carried debris and victims far downstream. Some bodies were reportedly recovered as far away as India. The scale of destruction has also created a massive economic challenge. Nepal's Finance Minister has estimated that the country could need around $4 billion to $5 billion for reconstruction following the disaster.

A massive glacier collapse in the Himalayas triggered a surge of water, mud, rock and ice through valleys near the Nepal-Tibet border. Rescue teams are using helicopters and ground operations to search for survivors and reach isolated areas.
