How this Mumbaikar shot a unique Marathi-English thriller in Germany and India

Shooting a bilingual crosscultural indie film requires massive studio backing or years navigating government red tape But writerdirector Gaurav Thakur chose a different path for his crosscultural and a guy was requesting Bombay Blood My dad had donated blood around 150 times before he passed away and had a vast network That idea stayed with merdquoWhen Thakur later relocated to Germany for work a strange cultural shock sparked the visual framework for the film Landing on his first Sunday he stepped out to find empty silent streets ldquoIt felt like a complete lockdown like COVIDrdquo he says Realising that Sunday mornings in Germany offered a natural emptiness on the streets the apocalyptic yet grounded plot clicked into placeTo anchor the film in his Maharashtrian roots Thakur brought in the fading folk culture of the Potraj ldquoI wanted something which is connected to the land something relatable to our Marathi audiencerdquo he explains ldquoThe protagonist is designed as per that Marathi culture was never featured before in an international film like thisrdquoThe Bombay Blood represents a radical departure for regional Indian cinema Marathi films have historically centred on local sociocultural or rural narratives within Maharashtra By showcasing a distinct aspect of Maharashtrian culture in a European landscape and blending it with a multilingual crosscontinental cast Thakur is in uncharted territoryDirk B and Gaurav ThakurUsually international coproductions involve heavy institutional funding bodies months of paperwork and corporate studio structures Philip Oliver Baumgarten who plays Sam Fischer says it was refreshing to bypass the traditional slowmoving European machinery ldquoYou have to apply again and again for money here in Germany and it takes a long timerdquo he addsThakur threw the playbook out the window Operating without an assistant director and forced to pivot due to visa rejections for his Indian crew he wore a dozen hats at once He was acting directing producing and stepping in where neededFor European actors accustomed to rigid highly compartmentalised studio workflows working with an Indian director was an eyeopener Yet Baumgarten found that creative instincts bridged the gap instantlyReflecting on the collaboration Baumgarten says ldquoThe energies were vibing so there wasnrsquot really quite that difference Itrsquos what you see beside the person and what he pingpongs back I go with the flowrdquoPhilip Oliver B and Sabine UrbanIf you walk into The Bombay Blood donrsquot expect the standard establishing wide shots that films open with typically Thakur deliberately set out to subvert conventional grammar ldquoI wanted to break that rule right from the startrdquo Thakur explains ldquoWhen you are too close and then all of a sudden you go out from it you feel the tension release even more If itrsquos a tight shot you feel more claustrophobicrdquo explaining how this visual language works better for his filmFor the German cast which includes Katrin Ingendoh this meant unlearning standard cinematic habits Sabine Urbane who plays Freya Hansen and Dirk Boumlhling who plays Dr Gerhard Kaiser recall constantly questioning whether certain technical choices would work on screenYet Thakurrsquos vision kept the production moving at a lightning pace Urbane even pulled off a Urbane says explaining her character ldquoShe would always step back to help another person to get through a crisis stepping back behind herself and opening up to new people and trying to find out how to help themrdquoThakur notes that Urbane brings a distinct warmness to the dynamic manifested in the form of a dependable friendOn the flip side is Boumlhling who plays the formidable Dr Kaiser Far from playing a traditional villain Boumlhling leaned into the layered complexity of a man driven by familial duty and protectionBoumlhling shares ldquoOne of the sentences I was very very happy about in the last trailer was that he found authority without raising his voice For me as an actor itrsquos very important to be a real characterrdquoBoumlhlingrsquos towering screen presence and local renown earned him a playful moniker from the director during recent press tours the Amitabh Bachchan of Bremen Standing a couple of inches taller than Bachchan Boumlhling admits the crosscultural immersion has been surreal ldquoSince we met Gaurav we always have only Indians aroundrdquo Boumlhling laughsThe linguistic hurdles provided plenty of humor on set as well Thakurrsquos dialogues leaned heavily into a formal British rhythm unlike German English which is more casual ldquoWe fought for every word to change but we gave up somehowrdquo Urbane jokes Boumlhling adds ldquoMy English is more like American English so nobodyrsquos talking like that But after learning those IndianEnglish lines nothing can happen to me as an actor worldwiderdquoDespite operating on a shoestring budget the film has struck a nerve Following a viral video The Bombay Blood has sparked requests for private community screenings from the Indian diaspora and local film enthusiasts across Munich Stuttgart Berlin London Sweden the US and Singapore In Schauburg a screening has been championed entirely by local supportAs Thakur prepares for a multicity tour across India this September the film stands as a
