<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/other-sports/article/wimbledon-2026-sinner-is-a-winner-again-after-french-open-disappointment-23639511" rel="nofollow">World No. 1 Jannik Sinner</a> has announced his decision to withdraw from the US Open 2026 due to a knee injury. The Italian star earlier withdrew from the Cincinnati Open due to injury issues, which have persisted throughout the month.
In a post on social media, the 2024 US Open winner said that he has taken the tough decision to withdraw from the US Open after failing to recover from a right knee issue that kept him out of the Cincinnati Open.
"Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue. I'm obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there," Sinner said in a statement.
Jannik Sinner, who captured his <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/other-sports/article/irrepressible-sinner-outlasts-zverev-to-win-second-straight-wimbledon-title-23639476" rel="nofollow">fifth major title at Wimbledon</a> last month, has not played ​since sustaining the injury earlier this month. He pulled out ​of the Cincinnati Open and also skipped the Canadian Open on the way to the US Open.
<h2>Carlos Alcaraz set to compete at US Open</h2>
Sinner's announcement came a day after rival and defending champion <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/other-sports/photo/in-photos-carlos-alcaraz-confirms-us-open-return-after-four-month-injury-layoff-112624/1" rel="nofollow">Carlos Alcaraz confirmed his return</a> from a wrist injury at the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year.
Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has been sidelined since April because of a right wrist injury, forcing him to miss both the French Open and Wimbledon.&nbsp;
Sinner's absence removes one of the Spaniard's biggest rivals and ⁠could ease ​his path as he bids for ​an eighth Grand Slam crown. Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz could battle it out for a Major title in New York next week.
The US Open will run from August 23 to September ​13.
