In the ongoing Swiss Indoors, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/other-sports/article/emotional-wawrinka-receives-us-open-farewell-after-final-grand-slam-match-23647759" rel="nofollow">Switzerland's tennis star Stan Wawrinka</a> suffered a loss by 7-5, 7-6 (2) against the Czech Republic's Jiř&iacute; Lehečka.
With this, he drew the curtains on his illustrious career in Basel.
Wawrinka's last shot as a professional athlete was a backhand that landed wide, which in turn led to audible disappointment from the crowd.
Earlier, he had announced in December last year that 2026 would be his last year on tour, following which he received heartwarming send-offs throughout the season.
Before his final match, he told the ATP TOUR website that he wanted to step away from the sport with no regrets.
"For me, all I wanted in my career was to give everything, to have no regrets, to always fight, to always give 100 per cent in every match - out of respect for myself, for the opponent, for the tournament, for the fans, for everybody. That was always the most important thing for more than 20 years, and that's the only way you can leave the sport: without any regrets," he said.
