<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ind-vs-sl-2nd-test-yashasvi-jaiswal-hits-back-at-criticism-over-altercation-with-asitha-fernando-23646360" rel="nofollow">Indian opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal</a> and Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando have both been penalised 25 per cent of their respective match fees after getting into an on-field altercation on the opening day of the second Test in Colombo.
In addition to the financial fine, the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/icc-suspends-cricket-canadas-membership-over-governance-breaches-23633155" rel="nofollow">International Cricket Council</a> (ICC) added a single demerit point to each player's disciplinary record.
The incident occurred in the 17th over of India's opening innings right after Fernando got the better of Jaiswal. Following his dismissal, Jaiswal went towards the bowler as words were exchanged. Fernando then moved with his head in Jaiswal's direction, prompting the Indian opener to lean back in, causing physical contact between their heads.
Confirming the disciplinary action, the ICC released an official statement.
"Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for formal hearings."
"Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to 'inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match)." &nbsp;
"In addition to this, one demerit point each has been added to the disciplinary records of Fernando and Jaiswal, both of whom did not have any previous offences in the preceding 24-month period," the statement added.
<h2>Jaiswal defends response prior to day two</h2>
Before the second day's action got underway, Jaiswal stood by how he reacted to the tense moment on the field, offering a firm stance on the matter.
"If you don't know what he said then please don't make your judgment if anyone cross the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply"
The official charges were brought against the players by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, alongside third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella. Under ICC regulations, Level 1 code violations carry sanctions ranging from an official reprimand up to a maximum fine of 50 per cent of the player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
