Team India's wicketkeeper-batsman <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ind-vs-eng-4th-test-rishabh-pant-grit-reminds-fredun-de-vitre-of-nari-contractor-bravery-in-1959-23586968" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Rishabh Pant</a> is likely to feature in the second round of the Ranji Trophy for Delhi, which is set to start from October 25 onwards.
Ranji Trophy could serve as a preparatory event for Pant ahead of the two-match Test series against South Africa.
Earlier, the swashbuckling left-hander was ruled out due to a foot injury, which he sustained during the fourth Test match against England at Manchester.
This is in line with what chief selector <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ind-vs-aus-ajit-agarkar-claims-it-is-impossible-to-have-three-different-captains-after-shubman-gill-named-new-odi-captain-23597193" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Ajit Agarkar</a> had hinted late last month in Dubai when announcing the squad for the ongoing home series against West Indies, consisting of two Tests, which started India's home season.
Pant received a blow on his foot in an attempt to play a stroke on the yorker bowled by England's pacer Chris Woakes.
However, the five-match Test series against England ended in a 2-2 draw under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.
The left-hander had a decent run in the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/football/article/bellingham-left-out-of-thomas-tuchels-england-squad-against-wales-and-latvia-23597134" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">England</a> series. Having played four matches for India on the tour, he accumulated 479 runs, including two centuries and three half-centuries. He finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer in the series and had a strike rate of 77.63.
Pant is understood to be in the final stages of his rehab and is due for a fitness assessment at Bengaluru's BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) later this week. While he is able to move without any discomfort, he is working on strengthening his foot through mobility exercises and weight training drills and has also resumed his batting.
If cleared, Pant could link up with the Delhi squad, which will kickstart their campaign against Hyderabad on October 15. Pant remains "slightly doubtful" for this fixture as per the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).
It is likely that Pant could captain Delhi when he plays, and at the moment, the team is being led by Ayush Badoni, his teammate at <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ipl-2025-lucknows-superb-giants-23513416" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Lucknow Super Giants</a> (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Currently, the Indian team under the leadership of Gill is busy engaging in the two-match Test series against the West Indies. The Gill-led side won the first Test match by an innings and 140 runs.
The second match between India and the West Indies is scheduled to begin from October 10.
