<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ipl-2026-head-coach-ashish-nehra-speaks-about-gujarat-titans-approach-ahead-of-season-23622389" rel="nofollow">Gujarat Titans' (GT) head coach Ashish Nehra</a> feels that Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill are very different and also explained the nature of both players.
"They are very, very different. You are talking about north pole and south pole. Both of them were like me, not somebody who has done much coaching," he said.
"Both of them were not somebody who has done much captaincy, but you learn on your way forward, and suddenly somebody is pretty much doing captaincy for India in two formats. He is only going to get better," added Nehra.
The former cricketer then spoke about Pandya and said that he is always keen to learn. Further, Nehra said that Gill is a bit reserved and is a work in progress.
"One thing is for sure: he (Pandya) completely trusted me, which was the perfect, perfect thing. He will always be keen to learn. He will always ask if something doesn't go right or doesn't go well. He is somebody you can have lots of conversations with," said the 47-year-old former cricketer.
"The other way around, Shubman is a little reserved, a little shy, but that's okay. Everyone is different. There is no right or wrong. He (Gill) is someone who will not talk or have as many conversations as <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/indian-cricketer-hardik-pandya-spotted-with-a-new-bald-look-23647909" rel="nofollow">Hardik Pandya</a>, but he is to the point. He is somebody who is very keen to learn and keen to observe. Of course, he is a work in progress. He is only 26-27, and it is not that he has been doing captaincy for so many years. It is only 1-2 seasons, and you learn things and you will get better," he added.

Just a month later at age 23, he smashed 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand. He went on to score over 350 runs in India's run to the 2023 World Cup final and won the 2025 Champions Trophy with the senior team. Gill also starred in the 4-1 Test series win against England in 2024, hitting tons in Visakhapatnam and Dharamsala alongside clutch half-centuries in Rajkot and Ranchi.
In the IPL, Gill assumed the captaincy of Gujarat Titans in 2024 following Hardik Pandya's exit, leading the side to the playoffs in 2025 while scoring 650 runs. He followed that up with a massive 732-run season in 2026, finishing as the league's second-highest run-scorer behind teenage star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
After <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ind-vs-nz-mitchell-santner-heaps-praise-on-rohit-sharma-virat-kohli-23648814" rel="nofollow">Rohit Sharma</a> retired from Test cricket, Gill was appointed Test captain for the 2025 tour of England. He responded with a historic campaign, scoring 754 runs at an average of 75.40 with four centuries, including a personal best of 269, to secure a 2-2 draw. It marked the second-highest tally ever by a captain in a Test series, trailing only Don Bradman's 810 runs during the 1936-37 Ashes.
Across his career, Gill has scored 3,043 runs in 43 Tests at 43.47, with 11 centuries. His ODI record features 3,379 runs in 67 matches at an average of 60.33, while his T20I record includes 869 runs in 36 games at a 138.59 strike rate.
