Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has taken significant steps in the CJP protest case by ordering an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into allegations of police excesses during the agitation. The bench directed the immediate release of detained minors, barred coercive action against students for the time being, and issued notices to the Centre along with seven states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Kerala. While reaffirming that peaceful protest is a constitutional right, the bench emphasized that the rule of law must prevail and that individuals accused of criminal acts can be dealt with separately.

The political battle over the Karur stampede has intensified after a senior DMK leader made explosive remarks suggesting that CM Vijay should have been arrested immediately following his Karur campaign. The comments have reignited one of Tamil Nadu's biggest political controversies, with the dispute now reaching the Supreme Court. DMK leader Paranthamen's statement, in which he said, "We should have arrested Vijay. We didn't, that's our only mistake," has triggered sharp political reactions ahead of Vijay's scheduled visit to Karur. The remarks have further escalated tensions between the ruling establishment and the rapidly growing TVK. The legal battle has also taken a significant turn, with the DMK approaching the Supreme Court seeking directions against Vijay and senior TVK leaders. The petition reportedly seeks to restrain what it describes as threatening remarks and false accusations linked to the Karur stampede controversy. Meanwhile, Vijay is expected to meet the families affected by the Karur stampede during his upcoming visit, as authorities continue relief measures and political scrutiny surrounding the tragedy remains intense.
