Google DeepMind researcher quits over fears advanced AI could cause harm within five years

Despite enjoying his work and declining competing offers from OpenAI and Anthropic, Engels left because he believes advanced AI presents a terrifying risk of causing immense harm within the next five years

Concerns over Artificial Intelligence (AI) development grew after Google DeepMind researcher Josh Engels left the company’s AGI safety team to join evaluation group METR.

Despite enjoying his work and declining competing offers from OpenAI and Anthropic, Engels left because he believes advanced AI presents a terrifying risk of causing immense harm within the next five years.
