"Starlink would help the least served in India, especially in rural areas," Musk said on X while resharing a post by DogeDesigner that highlighted gaps in mobile connectivity across the country.

The post said 11,256 of India's listed villages still had no 4G coverage as of May 2026. It also pointed to the significant difference in internet subscription density between rural and urban India.
According to the figures cited in the post, India had 1.093 billion internet subscriptions as of March 2026, including 440.87 million in rural areas. Rural internet subscription density stood at 48.31 subscriptions per 100 people, compared with 126.80 in urban areas.
<h2>Starlink seeks regulatory clearance in India</h2>
Musk's comments come as <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/world-news/article/starlink-satellites-help-kyoto-researchers-map-earths-elusive-thermosphere-23644163" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Starlink</a> continues to seek regulatory approvals to launch its satellite broadband services in India.
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, provides internet connectivity through a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites. The company has been working to secure the necessary approvals to begin commercial operations in the Indian market.
The company has reportedly made a fresh application to offer satellite communication services in India. Earlier, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre rejected Starlink's application for its Gen 2 satellite network, citing concerns that certain features and the radio frequencies proposed for use did not meet Indian requirements.
The Gen 2 system also includes direct-to-device connectivity capabilities, which could potentially allow compatible mobile devices to remain connected beyond the reach of conventional mobile towers.
<h2>Rural connectivity remains a challenge</h2>
The post reshared by Musk also highlighted the progress made under BharatNet, the government's programme to expand broadband connectivity in rural areas.
According to the figures cited, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/tamil-nadu-to-procure-2-5-lakh-onts-for-bharatnet-broadband-rollout-23637557" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">BharatNet</a> has laid more than 850,000 route-km of fibre and made around 221,000 Gram Panchayats service-ready. However, Points of Presence were operational in only 80,472 Gram Panchayats as of June 2026.
Supporters of satellite broadband argue that services such as Starlink could help address connectivity gaps in areas where laying conventional telecommunications infrastructure is difficult or commercially challenging.
Such connectivity could be particularly useful in remote villages, mountainous regions, islands and areas affected by natural disasters, where establishing and maintaining terrestrial networks can be more difficult.
The post also suggested that direct-to-device connectivity could help keep mobile phones connected in locations beyond conventional tower coverage.
"The Indian government should complete the remaining clearances, allocate spectrum and clear Starlink for commercial launch ASAP. India has already waited far too long," it noted.
<h2>Starlink says talks with Indian government continue</h2>
Starlink's push for a commercial launch comes as the Indian government works on the regulatory framework governing satellite spectrum allocation and satellite communication services.
In a separate development, Starlink Business Operations Vice President Lauren Dreyer said the company remains in discussions with the Indian government over the launch of its <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/elon-musk-s-starlink-kicks-off-security-demos-in-mumbai-a-step-closer-to-satellite-internet-in-india-23600903" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">commercial satellite internet service</a>.
Her comments followed media reports claiming that the approval process had been frozen because of geopolitical and security concerns, including alleged concerns over the use of Starlink terminals during the Iran conflict.
The reports suggested that security agencies were concerned about the ability to control a US-based satellite operator during periods of heightened geopolitical tension.
Dreyer rejected those reports and said the company continued to engage with Indian authorities.
"Starlink remains in active and productive discussions with the Government of India contrary to misleading stories based upon unsubstantiated claims from anonymous sources."
<h2>Satellite broadband market awaits final approvals</h2>
Starlink's entry into India will depend on the completion of regulatory and security clearances, as well as decisions on spectrum allocation.
