<p><a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/world-news/article/us-diplomats-walk-out-of-un-meeting-after-france-criticises-trumps-human-rights-record-23641957" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">US President Donald Trump</a> has renewed his call to end daylight saving time, urging the Senate to pass legislation that he said has already been approved by the House of Representatives.</p>
<p>Trump made the remarks while addressing workers at the General Motors Milford Proving Ground in Michigan, where he briefly shifted from discussing the automobile industry to the issue of changing clocks twice a year.</p>
<h2>Trump urges Congress to act</h2>
<p>Recalling how his father would buy a new Cadillac every two years, Trump remarked that the purchases were so regular that "you could set your clocks by it."</p>
<p>He then added, "And, by the way, speaking of that, let's get rid of daylight saving time stuff, OK?"</p>
<p>The President said legislation on the issue was already before Congress.</p>
<p>"We have a bill in. Hopefully, the Senate is going to improve that one. The House approved it, and we're going to get rid of that," he said.</p>
<h2>No clarity on preferred time system</h2>
<p>While calling for an end to the twice-yearly clock changes, Trump did not clarify whether he favours adopting permanent standard time or permanent daylight saving time.</p>
<p>He also did not provide additional details about the legislation or its expected timeline in Congress.</p>
<h2>Trump explains his speaking style</h2>
<p>After his remarks on daylight saving time, Trump returned to discussing the automobile industry and joked about his habit of moving between topics during speeches.</p>
<p>"You know, it's called the weave, right? I go from &mdash; we always get back to the right subject," he said.</p>
<p>He then continued talking about his father's customised Cadillac, recalling that it had been lengthened so it could be driven by his father or by a chauffeur.</p>
<h2>Daylight saving remains a debated issue</h2>
<p>Most parts of the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/world-news/article/donald-trump-weighs-strikes-on-iran-says-diplomatic-talks-are-ongoing-23641606" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">United States</a> adjust their clocks twice each year, moving them forward in spring and back in autumn.</p>
<p>Supporters of ending the practice argue that the biannual clock changes disrupt sleep patterns, travel, business operations and daily routines. However, debate continues over whether the country should adopt permanent standard time or permanent daylight saving time.</p>
<p>Any change to the current system would require legislation to be passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate before being signed into law by the President.</p>
<p>A permanent change to US timekeeping would also affect the seasonal time difference between the United States and India, as well as international flight schedules, financial markets and cross-border business communications.</p>
