A zoo in China’s Guigang — one of the hardest-hit cities in the southwestern region of Guangxi — locked lions, bears, and wolves in their cages as flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak hit the region, a decision animal rights group PETA called “unconscionable.” 

Earlier this week, the zoo locked up animals to prevent them from escaping amid flooding. “We didn’t want to create any more trouble,” the zoo owner said. Three lions drowned, and the locking up proved to be useless as more than 100 animals went missing from their flood-damaged enclosures, while locked-up survivors were said to be in poor condition.
