China tightens exit rules, bans travel over technology security concerns

China has tightened travel rules, allowing exit bans for citizens linked to technology export violations, national security risks or illegal activities abroad. Analysts warn the broad rules could be applied arbitrarily amid rising US-China tensions over technology and AI.

China imposed sweeping travel restrictions on its citizens on Tuesday, including exit bans on those deemed to endanger the country's "industrial or technological security".

Citizens who violate technology import and export regulations could be banned from leaving China, the State Council said.
