Three leading hospitality industry bodies have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to intervene in the ongoing enforcement action by the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), claiming that inspections and regulatory action should strictly follow the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, which consolidates multiple food laws.
The Maharashtra FDA, led by Tukaram Mundhe, an IAS officer known for strict implementation of existing rules and laws, has targeted establishments that have not complied with hygiene standards demanded of such places.
