The hydrogen-powered train will operate on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route, connecting Jind Junction, Gohana Junction and Sonipat while serving intermediate stations. The launch places India among a select group of countries operating hydrogen-powered trains.

The train generates electricity onboard using hydrogen and oxygen through fuel cells, producing only water vapour and heat as by-products. Unlike conventional electric trains, it does not require overhead power lines.

The 10-coach hydrogen-powered train comprises two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars and eight trailer coaches, can accommodate around 2,600 passengers, has a design speed of 110 kmph and will initially operate at up to 75 kmph.

Indian Railways has established an integrated hydrogen ecosystem at Jind with facilities for hydrogen production through electrolysis, storage, compression and refuelling. The facility can store nearly 3,000 kg of hydrogen.

The hydrogen train has undergone independent safety assessments by TUV SUD, Germany, and is equipped with hydrogen leak, flame, heat and smoke detection systems, automatic shut-off mechanisms, continuous ventilation and emergency response features.

Developed under the leadership of Indian Railways with technical support from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the project supports the National Green Hydrogen Mission and India's long-term net-zero ambitions.

During his visit to Haryana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also dedicates key sections of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, a project expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve connectivity to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and boost regional economic development.
