Prime Minister <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-pm-modi-to-address-india-maritime-week-at-a-special-plenary-session-on-wednesday-23600463?button=next" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Narendra Modi</a> on Friday paid floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat on the 150th birth anniversary of India's first home minister.
The birth anniversary of Patel is being celebrated as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) on October 31 since 2014, when PM Modi became the prime minister for the first time.
PM Modi, accompanied by thousands of participants, took the oath on the 150th Jayanti of Sardar Patel.
"I solemnly swear that I will dedicate myself to the preservation of the unity, integrity, and security of the nation. I will also make every effort to spread this message among my countrymen. I take this oath in the spirit of my country's unity, which was made possible by the foresight and hard work of <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/join-run-for-unity-honour-sardar-vallabhbhai-patels-vision-of-united-india-pm-modi-23600403" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel</a>. I also resolve to do my part to ensure the internal security of my country," he recited.
Earlier, PM Modi recalled the late leader's contribution in shaping the ideology, governance, and destiny of the nation during its formative years. He shared a visual post on his social media platform remembering his legacy in vision and public service.
"India pays homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th Jayanti. He was the driving force behind India's integration, thus shaping our nation's destiny in its formative years. His unwavering commitment to national integrity, good governance and public service continues to inspire generations. We also reaffirm our collective resolve to uphold his vision of a united, strong and self-reliant India," <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/pm-modi-india-asean-ties-powerful-foundation-for-global-stability-23600352" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">PM Modi</a> wrote on X.
PM Modi arrived at Patel's 182-metre-tall statue, near Ekta Nagar in Gujarat's Narmada district, in the morning and paid his respects to the Iron Man of India by offering flower petals.
He then left for a nearby venue where he is scheduled to administer the Ekta Diwas pledge to the gathering and witness the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade.
This year's Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations will include a cultural festival and the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/pm-modi-in-mumbai-india-and-uk-push-for-stronger-digital-and-trade-ties-through-ceta-23598099" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">National Unity Day</a> parade by police and paramilitary forces.
The Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Parade, a major attraction of the celebrations, features contingents from paramilitary forces like the BSF and CRPF, and various state police forces.
This year, the event has become even more special with the parade being organised on the lines of the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/pm-modi-calls-for-enhanced-quality-standards-for-make-in-india-products-with-focus-on-zero-defect-and-zero-effect-23588893" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Republic Day parade</a>.
