At least 93 seized silencers by the Seawoods Traffic Police Unit have been destroyed; now authorities plan to crush approximately 450 more on October 20 at Kalamboli and Panvel.
A top police official stated that it will also be symbolic to destroy these on the day Ravan is burnt.
These pricey modified silencers extract the price of peace and calm with their ear-splitting noise. We are heartened by news that this campaign will go to the heart of the problem. Cops are going to target mechanics and workshops that supply and install illegal exhausts, aiming to cut the modified menace off at the source. This means choking the oxygen at the source point itself, which will be devastatingly effective and also mean that once caught, it will be difficult for those using these to source them again.&nbsp;
The drive must also be broadened to include more areas, especially the &lsquo;<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/mumbai-cops-impound-52-two-wheelers-in-crackdown-on-illegal-bike-racing-menace-23484822" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">bike racing</a> gangs&rsquo; that use these so often and their source should be identified and nabbed. It should also be sustained, and surprise checks on mechanics and garages indulging in this will be more useful.&nbsp;
