Tata Sons <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/business-news/article/tata-sons-chairman-chandrasekaran-may-step-down-amid-reappointment-uncertainty-23644388" rel="nofollow">Chairman N Chandrasekaran</a> has resigned from his position and will not seek re-appointment when his current tenure ends in February 2027, according to a media report.
The development comes ahead of Tata Sons' Annual General Meeting scheduled for August 18.
While posting about his resignation on social media handle X, Chandrasekaran said, "I have completed 40 years of professional life at the Tata Group. I am grateful for the immensely satisfying opportunity to contribute to this venerable institution. Leading Tata Sons over the past decade has been a great honour and a profound responsibility."

Mentioning that he will be stepping down as the chairman on February 20, next year, Chandrasekaran said, "My current tenure as the Chairman of Tata Sons comes to an end on Feb 20, 2027. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended the extension of my next term for a period of five years, which was recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board. Subsequently, the resolution was tabled in the Tata Sons Board on Feb 24, 2026. However, the proposal was not carried through because one of the Board Members did not support it, and in the absence of unanimous support, I chose to defer the decision."
<h2>Chandrasekaran joined TCS as an intern in 1987</h2>
N Chandrasekaran has served as Chairman of Tata Sons and the Tata Group since January 2017. He joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as an intern in 1987 and went on to become the company's Chief Executive Officer in 2009 before taking charge of Tata Sons.
In July 2025, Tata Sons had set two conditions for extending <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/business-news/article/tata-trusts-to-focus-on-healthcare-and-education-noel-tata-23642921" rel="nofollow">Chandrasekaran's tenure</a>, including that the holding company would continue to remain unlisted and that a resolution would be reached on the stake held by the Shapoorji Pallonji (SP) Group, according to the report.
Tata Sons is the principal investment holding company of the Tata Group, with Tata Trusts holding around 66 per cent of the company.
While highlighting his resignation, he also added, "It has been 6 months since that Board meeting, and no resolution has been reached till date. Tata Sons is a very large institution and there are many strategic projects that are under critical stages of execution. It is not only necessary to have a leader in place to lead the Group beyond Feb 2027, but also clarity on leadership is important for employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders." 
<h2>Tata Sons continue to restructure their conglomerate&nbsp;</h2>
Chandrasekaran's exit comes as the conglomerate continues to navigate the restructuring of its businesses and the group's broader ownership and capital structure.
Following the development, shares of several Tata Group companies came under selling pressure in Wednesday's morning trade.
Tata chairman in his statement also highlighted that the board should decide on his succession soon, he said, "Under these circumstances, earlier today, I have communicated to the Tata Sons Board, that I have decided not to offer myself for reappointment when my term ends on Feb 20, 2027. I have asked the Board to decide on the succession soon to ensure a proper transition."
<h2>Impact on stock market&nbsp;</h2>
Soon after news about N Chandrasekaran resignation broke out, Tata Consumer Products declined more than 1 per cent to Rs 1,066 apiece on the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/stock-market/article/sensex-falls-20755-points-nifty-sheds-7330-points-in-early-trade-amid-elevated-crude-oil-prices-23644382" rel="nofollow">NSE, while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) </a>fell up to 5.
Moreover, Titan Company shares were also down 1.03 per cent at Rs 5,075.10, while Tata Power Company declined 0.9 per cent to Rs 376.60.
