<p>Five people were killed in a <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/samruddhi-expressway-accident-five-family-members-killed-in-samruddhi-expressway-crash-in-amravati-23637382" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">collision involving a car and a truck on the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway</a> in Maharashtra's Wardha district early Monday, after an ethanol-laden container truck overturned and blocked the carriageway, police said.</p>
<p>The accident occurred at around 3 am near Virul village, disrupting traffic and prompting authorities to divert vehicles on the affected stretch of the expressway.</p>
<h2>Ethanol tanker overturns, blocks expressway</h2>
<p>According to police and officials, a container truck carrying highly flammable ethanol overturned near Interchange (IC) 80, completely blocking the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/maharahtra-pune-nagpur-bus-collides-with-truck-on-samruddhi-mahamarg-15-seriously-hurt-23634283" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai-to-Nagpur carriageway</a>.</p>
<p>As a result, traffic heading towards Nagpur was diverted to the opposite carriageway, leading to heavy congestion.</p>
<p>Officials said the overturned tanker could not be removed immediately because it was carrying ethanol. Authorities are first emptying the container before undertaking its removal to prevent any fire or safety hazard.</p>
<h2>Five killed in subsequent collision</h2>
<p>While restoration work was underway, another truck rammed into the rear of a car at the same location.</p>
<p>Police said five people were killed in the collision. According to officials, four of the victims were members of a family from Wardha district travelling in the car.</p>
<p>The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released.</p>
<h2>Rescue and restoration operations underway</h2>
<p>Teams from the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP), Wardha Police, Fire Brigade, and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) reached the accident site and launched rescue, traffic management and restoration operations.</p>
<p>Officials said all necessary precautions are being taken while handling the overturned ethanol container due to the highly inflammable nature of its cargo.</p>
<p>The administration said updates on the restoration of normal traffic movement would be issued periodically.</p>
<h2>Traffic diverted, commuters advised to avoid affected stretch</h2>
<p>Authorities have issued a traffic advisory for motorists travelling on the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/seven-die-in-head-on-collision-on-mumbai-nagpur-samruddhi-expressway-23358659" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Samruddhi Expressway</a>.</p>
<p>Commuters travelling from Nagpur towards Mumbai have been advised to avoid using the expressway up to Wardha for the next few hours and instead use the Nagpur-Amravati Highway, rejoining the expressway through the Amravati Gate interchange.</p>
<p>Similarly, motorists travelling from Mumbai towards Nagpur have been requested to exit the Samruddhi Expressway at the Amravati Gate interchange and continue via the Nagpur-Amravati Highway until normal traffic is restored.</p>
<h2>Investigation underway</h2>
<p>Police are investigating the sequence of events that led to the two accidents and are examining the circumstances surrounding the overturning of the ethanol-laden container truck.</p>
<p>Efforts to safely clear the accident site and restore normal traffic on the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-six-injured-as-car-collides-head-on-with-truck-on-samruddhi-mahamarg-23489897" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway</a> were continuing at the time of filing this report.</p>
