Saurabh Chandrakar, one of the key accused in the alleged <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/mahadev-betting-app-case-cbi-extradites-promoter-sourabh-chandrakar-from-oman-23657998" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mahadev betting app scam</a>, has been remanded to eight days of police custody until November 12 by a special court in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, reported the ANI.
The court also granted permission to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take Chandrakar to Delhi for examination as part of its ongoing investigation.
Earlier on Wednesday, the CBI took Chandrakar out of its office for a medical examination ahead of his production before the court.
<h2>CBI brings Chandrakar to Raipur from Delhi</h2>
According to the ANI, on Tuesday, the CBI brought Chandrakar to Raipur from New Delhi after obtaining a two-day transit remand from a Delhi court.
Chandrakar was arrested in Oman and brought back to India following extradition proceedings. He had been detained by the Royal Oman Police after an Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against him.
A specially deputed <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/mahadev-betting-app-case-cbi-arrests-mahadev-betting-app-kingpin-abhishek-kumar-in-hyderabad-after-arrival-from-dubai-23651727" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">CBI team</a> travelled to Oman and escorted him back to India.
<h2>Two CBI cases and separate ED investigation</h2>
According to the CBI, Chandrakar is wanted in two cases in which chargesheets have already been filed. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also filed a prosecution complaint against him in a separate case, the news agency reported.
The CBI's investigation into the Mahadev Online Book cases was initiated following a request from the Chhattisgarh government.
The agency has described the platform as one of the country's largest alleged illegal <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/mahadev-betting-app-case-ed-seizes-properties-worth-rs-91-82-crore-in-online-betting-scam-23611037" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">online betting syndicates</a>, operating from outside India.
<h2>Mahadev betting syndicate operations</h2>
According to the CBI investigation, the syndicate allegedly facilitated betting on cricket, football, card games and other events through a network of franchised panels and branches across India, as per the ANI.&nbsp;
These panels reportedly enrolled users and collected betting stakes.
The agency has alleged that proceeds from illegal betting were routed through numerous mule bank accounts and layered through multiple transactions before being transferred overseas through hawala channels.
A portion of the proceeds was allegedly used to pay protection money to public servants to ensure the syndicate could operate without interference.
<h2>CBI invokes corruption, cheating and forgery charges</h2>
The CBI has filed chargesheets invoking provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the Indian Penal Code relating to criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery, along with provisions of the Chhattisgarh Gambling (Prohibition) Act, reported the ANI.
Separately, the ED has attached several properties in India and abroad in connection with the alleged <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/mahadev-betting-case-ed-conducts-multi-state-searches-raids-residence-of-travel-firm-founder-23520628" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">betting scam</a>.
The investigation into the financial transactions and the alleged involvement of various individuals is ongoing.
