Pitru Paksha is a period traditionally dedicated to remembering and honouring ancestors through Shraddha, Tarpan, Pind Daan, prayers and other offerings

The rituals are performed according to the relevant lunar tithi associated with an ancestor's death, with customs varying among families and regions

The Pitru Paksha observance will culminate with Sarva Pitru Amavasya, also known as Mahalaya Amavasya, on October 10

Devotees were on Sunday seen performing traditional rituals, including offering water mixed with black sesame seeds and preparing symbolic rice balls

The rituals are traditionally performed with prayers and offerings for the peace and well-being of departed ancestors

At Banganga Tank, ducks were also seen feeding on pind daan offerings and flowers placed on plates floating on the water as devotees carried out the rituals

A traditional practice involves setting aside portions of specially prepared food for five living beings

Banganga Tank, located within the Walkeshwar Temple complex, is a historic water body surrounded by temples and ghats

Devotees across Mumbai and other parts of the country observe the period by performing ancestral rites according to their family traditions
