With Dahi Handi 2026 around the corner, Mumbai’s Govinda pathaks have begun preparations for the festival, with teams stepping up their practice sessions to perfect the challenging human pyramid formations

Members of Pimpleshwar Mitra Mandal Govinda Pathak were seen practising at Banganga Tank in Walkeshwar on Sunday. The team worked on its coordination, balance, and formation as it prepared for the celebrations

The festival, celebrated a day after Janmashtami, sees Govinda teams compete to break a suspended earthen pot filled with curd and other offerings, with human pyramids formed to reach the handi

The practice session offered a glimpse of the teamwork and physical strength required to build the multi-tiered pyramids that are a highlight of Dahi Handi celebrations across Mumbai

This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated on September 4 and Dahi Handi on September 5

Dahi Handi has long been associated with the playful childhood stories of Lord Krishna, who is traditionally believed to have broken pots of curd and butter with his friends. The festival recreates that spirit through suspended handis and teams attempting to reach them by forming human pyramids.
