Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar on Friday handed over keys to 557 eligible residents of the N.M Joshi Marg's BDD Chawl redevelopment project in Parel, marking a major milestone in the rehabilitation of residents of Mumbai's historic chawls. The flats are located in three rehabilitation buildings completed in the first phase of the redevelopment project being implemented by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA)

Speaking at a ceremony held at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in Mumbai on November 6, Fadnavis said the state government was committed to ensuring that original Mumbaikars and people who had lived in the city for generations received spacious, permanent homes in Mumbai itself

Eleven residents were symbolically handed over keys and possession letters at the event by the Chief Minister and other dignitaries

Fadnavis said several BDD Chawl families had been living for generations in cramped homes measuring around 160 square feet, often without basic facilities

Under the redevelopment plan, eligible residents are being provided with 500-square-foot homes equipped with modern amenities. The new apartments include a living room and two bedrooms

He said the government wanted to provide quality housing and better facilities rather than earn profits from the redevelopment project

The Chief Minister also highlighted the historical importance of BDD Chawls, which have witnessed major social, economic, cultural and labour movements in Mumbai, including the Samyukta Maharashtra movement

The Chief Minister said the BDD Chawl redevelopment had remained pending for several years despite proposals from private developers

Considering the difficulties involved in completing such a large-scale project through private developers alone, the state government decided to appoint MHADA as the developer

The redevelopment work began in 2017-18 following the decision. Although the project faced several hurdles along the way, the government ensured that work continued and was subsequently accelerated, Fadnavis said

Deputy Chief Minister and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde directed the concerned agencies to complete the BDD Chawl redevelopment project on schedule without compromising on construction quality or facilities

Fadnavis reiterated that eligible police personnel who had been residing in BDD Chawls before 2011 would continue to receive homes at Rs 15 lakh

The government has also amended development regulations to accelerate stalled MHADA and Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects, Shinde said

Efforts are being made to ensure that residents receive their homes along with pending rent payments, he added

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar described the handover of homes to 557 families as a memorable occasion, particularly as it coincided with the festive season of Dhanteras and Diwali
