In a unique road safety initiative on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, the Thane Traffic Police opted for awareness instead of immediate punishment, tying rakhis on the wrists of motorists found violating traffic rules and distributing free helmets to some two-wheeler riders travelling without protective headgear.
The initiative was carried out at the Teen Hath Naka junction on the eve of Raksha Bandhan on Thursday. Instead of immediately issuing fines, traffic personnel stopped motorists, spoke to them about the importance of following traffic rules, and counselled them on road safety.
