Wildlife experts have flagged a growing trend in the city where people illegally purchase Indian Star Tortoises under the false assumption that they are “low-maintenance” pets, only to neglect their care. Wildlife organisations report that these animals are frequently abandoned once their health severely deteriorates from being kept in improper captivity. Despite being listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, the Indian Star Tortoise remains highly popular among irresponsible buyers.

Rising cases

Since June, The Petit Hospital, Parel, has received at least 10 abandoned Star Tortoises in critical condition. During the same period, wildlife NGO Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) rehabilitated 51 Star Tortoises.
