Mike Tyson’s Dharavi ‘homecoming’

Boxing legend Mike Tyson’s recent Netflix series followed by his comedy special on the same OTT has received a lot of positive reviews both on and offline. mid-day’s Sports Editor Ashwin Ferro even wrote a column (October 31) about how Tyson’s aggressive behaviour as an adult is an outcome of his troubled childhood which was riddled with extreme poverty.

Interestingly, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s bodyguard Gurmeet Singh, better known as Shera, has written in to say that the column brought back fond memories of Tyson’s 2018 visit to Mumbai. Shera was anchoring Tyson’s security detail during the trip and particularly recalled how the boxer had a great time with the slum kids of Dharavi.
“I really enjoyed reading the mid-day column about Mike Tyson in which he spoke about being a slumdog. I accompanied Tyson throughout his 2018 visit to India for a MMA event and various other appearances he made here. He was particularly excited about meeting the kids in Dharavi and enjoyed interacting with them. He told me it felt like home. He has a great sense of humour too, and we had a lot of fun together. Reading about his tough childhood was sad, but I’m also glad that mid-day has highlighted a genuine champion,” wrote Shera.

“It was a token of thanks for her visit. We sang Ye Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge, and followed it up with Kaisi Paheli Zindagani… The sport that she was, she stepped up and joined in,” shared vocalist William Richmond.

The vegan way uphill

What do you get when you put a bunch of nature lovers in the Sahyadris? A day of cliff jumping, swimming in natural pools, rock balancing and passing around homemade vegan food. On November 1, The Infinite Playground marked World Vegan Day with its annual community hike in Karjat, a tradition that began in 2018.

Led by Kuntal Joisher, a vegan two-time Everest summiteer, and a team of volunteers, the free outing brought together students, families and outdoor enthusiasts. The group also kept an eye out for birds, butterflies, frogs and other wildlife along the way.

To protect the landscape, the exact location was shared only with participants. Participants travelled by local trains and shared taxis, carried vegan food to share and collected their waste back. “For me, it’s seva, my way of giving back to the mountains that have given me everything,” Joisher said.
