On<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/celebrity-life/fashion-and-beauty/photo/national-handloom-day-2025-times-nita-ambani-celebrated-india-craftsmanship-106790" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"> National Handloom Day</a> (August 7), Vinay Narkar&rsquo;s, Tribute and Tribulations brought a Maharashtrian household to life through the Maratha-style painting, which developed in the 18th century and later became extinct. The Solapur-based Narkar elaborated about the painting, &ldquo;It took over a month and a half.

The painting features 200-year-old Paithani, Shahapuri, Puneri, Induri Chandrakala and Narayan Peth sarees, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai-guide/things-to-do/article/dress-like-a-marathi-mulgi-23283828" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Marathi jewellery</a> and objects. Human life and craft are intermingled; we cannot separate them. That is the tribute, but the tribulation is the hardships this heritage and material culture is facing today.&rdquo;
<h2>A little magic, please</h2>

The American poet Mary Oliver once famously wrote, &ldquo;You must never stop being whimsical,&rdquo; and the new musical Love You to the Moon &amp; Back, that was staged on August 8 at Third Bell Studio, Versova, seems to take that sentiment to heart. Created for adults and children, it follows Chandu, a boy who has lost his parents and lives with Rupali Maushi and his magical cat, Mooney.

Together, they embark on adventures. &ldquo;The play explores friendship, magic, grief and loneliness in a light-hearted way,&rdquo; explained artist Varshika Uchil, to which director Dhrreti Bhatt added, &ldquo;Kids these days are a lot on their iPads and are silently missing out on all the activities that make them whimsical.&rdquo;

We&rsquo;re no longer looking forward to skipping school on rainy days. Ask Aqui Thami of Sister Library in Bandra. The annual Monsoon School for women from all walks of life is operating in full swing as the skies over the city turn grey. &ldquo;This year, we have 17 instructors from varying artistic disciplines sharing knowledge. The classes will culminate with an exhibition in Mumbai in September. We also plan to bring out a new publication with it,&rdquo; Thami told us. This year, the library is also collecting menstrual hygiene products from donors to support relief organisations during regional crises, such as the recent Assam floods.

Sculptors and maritime enthusiasts Santosh Kumar Shetty and Prathamesh Sawant recently turned their fascination with Mumbai&rsquo;s maritime legacy into models of TS Dufferin and MSC Anisha.

&ldquo;MSC Anisha was comparatively easy, but the 14-inch Dufferin was harder to attempt. It took nearly a month, as we had only two black-and-white photographs and drawings. We recreated it using resin and 3D-printed resin,&rdquo; said Shetty.
