Seventeen firecracker varieties pass MPCB-Awaaz Foundation’s annual noise test, but 11 packets carry no noise-level declaration and QR codes on eight cannot be scanned; a 10,000-shot ladi records the highest reading at 93.1 dB(A)

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the Awaaz Foundation tested 17 types of firecrackers at Chembur’s RCF grounds on November 5, as part of their annual noise-level assessment ahead of Diwali. All the crackers tested were within the prescribed noise limit of 125 dB(A), although some exceeded 90 dB(A) during testing.
The tests were conducted using MPCB noise monitors to record both dB(A) and dB(C) levels. While dB(A) readings are commonly used to assess noise in relation to human hearing, the highest reading recorded on the open ground was 93.1 dB(A), according to the live readings seen by mid-day. The MPCB has not yet released its formal report.
