The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated seven tenders to appoint contractors for restoring roads, as and when they are dug up for utility works across Mumbai during the two-year contract period, at an estimated total cost of Rs 300 crore.
According to civic officials, payment to contractors will be on a work basis, funded by the entities responsible for trenching, so the actual costs will vary from the estimates. “The last time these tenders were floated, the estimation figure was approximately Rs 400 crore. This time it is lower as we expect that ducting done during road concreting and the proposed trenching policy to collectively decrease the need for trenching,” said a civic official.
