Santacruz East witnessed a close contest as the counting for the BMC polls ended, in which <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/bmc-elections-2026-congress-scores-big-in-malad-aslam-shaikh-takes-a-hit-23612374" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Congress&rsquo;s</a> Tulip Miranda emerged victorious in Kalina (ward No. 90) with a narrow lead of seven votes.

While the INC (Indian National Congress) candidate secured 5197 votes, her opponent, Jyoti Upadhyay from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), crept close with 5190 votes. Among a total of 10 competing candidates, Miranda and Upadhyay remained in the lead.
Despite a recount challenged by the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/bmc-election-2026-results-congress-demands-recount-after-close-defeat-by-bjp-candidate-in-ward-31-cops-deployed-in-kandivali-23612347" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">BJP candidate</a>, Miranda still came out with a higher vote count. &ldquo;We cannot ignore the power of a single voter,&rdquo; she told mid-day. &ldquo;However, we were leading in all the rounds, so we predicted the win,&rdquo; she added.
Miranda will be serving her second term as a BMC corporator, after the electoral ward was changed for a woman candidate. Her husband, Brian Miranda, preceded her as the corporator before her 2017 term.
Among the key developments in Kalina and Vakola, Miranda credits her family with transforming a barren seven-acre plot which turned into the first garden in Kalina. &ldquo;We also turned the Shastri Nagar Municipal School into a four-storey building, while it was previously set up in a chawl,&rdquo; she said.
As for the plan ahead, education remains a key agenda for Miranda, with a 24-hour study centre, and junior and senior colleges planned for the ward. Clean drinking water was also a primary part of the corporator&rsquo;s manifesto ahead of the 2026 <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/bmc-election-2026-results-maharashtra-sec-declares-results-for-mumbais-221-out-227-seats-bjp-wins-87-shiv-sena-ubt-victorious-in-64-wards-23612350" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">BMC elections</a>.
