The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-bmc-removes-nine-unauthorised-shops-from-andheri-footpaths-23635906" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)</a> has removed nine unauthorised shops that were occupying footpaths and obstructing pedestrian movement in the Andheri area of Mumbai, officials said on Friday.
The action was carried out on June 18 by the civic body's K West Ward as part of its ongoing drive against encroachments on public spaces.
According to BMC officials, one unauthorised shop on Fun Republic Road in Andheri was removed, while another illegal establishment was seized during the operation.
A larger drive was conducted on Veera Desai Road, where eight unauthorised shops were demolished.
In addition to the shops, civic teams removed illegally constructed sheds and staircases that had been erected on public footpaths.
Officials said these <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-demolition-drive-bmc-demolishes-43-structures-to-widen-busy-goregaon-road-23635619" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">structures were creating obstacles for pedestrians</a>&nbsp;and reducing the available walking space.
<h2>Footpaths cleared for pedestrians</h2>
Following the operation, the footpaths in the affected areas have been cleared, making it easier and safer for pedestrians to move through the locality.
The civic administration said the action was aimed at ensuring public pathways remain free from encroachments and accessible to all residents.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Deputy Municipal Commissioner Dr Bhagyashree Kapase and led by K West Ward Assistant Commissioner Chakrapani Alle.
Officials and staff from the ward's maintenance, building and factory, licensing and <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/lifestyle/health-&amp;-fitness/article/who-europe-releases-updated-heat-health-action-plans-guidance-here-are-the-changes-23634831" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">public health departments</a> participated in the drive using specialised equipment.
<h2>Demolition under police security</h2>
Adequate police security was provided by Amboli Police Station during the operation to maintain law and order and ensure the smooth execution of the drive.
