The Japanese football team coach’s gesture of apology after their recent FIFA World Cup exit proved that no one is above a simple sorry. Experts share how to make the magic words come naturally and sincerely

The Japanese football team bows down to fans
Little did we know, Team Japan’s soft-spoken manager Hajime Moriyasu had packed more than just tactics and game plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. Following the Blue Samurais’ heartbreaking exit after a last-minute 2-1 defeat to Brazil on June 30, Moriyasu reached for his most powerful weapon: an apology.
As the team huddled, the teary-eyed coach apologised to his players first. Moments later, the entire squad turned to the stands and bowed deeply before their fans. “My ability as a coach was insufficient. I want to say I am truly sorry,” he later opened up in a conference.
