Since the beginning of time, scientists and astrophysicists have explained that there is much more to the universe than we can see — hidden in gravity, light, cosmic radiation and, most importantly, frequencies. At Radio. Camera. Action — Astronomy Through Movies, a talk held at Kyurious Cattery, a community-driven initiative founded by Priyanka Kamthe and Sujay Jadhav, astrophysicist Kshitij Bane will use popular films and science fiction to explain how astronomers listen to invisible signals. A postdoctoral fellow at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics in Pune , Bane says, “My fascination for the Universe began with the instruments itself, the big telescopes and satellites and all the amazing technologies that we have developed to provide us the signals from so far away.”
Using sci-fi references, Bane will explore how radio telescopes, often depicted as tools for communicating with aliens, can reveal phenomena beyond conventional optical observation. “Radio telescopes can reveal a lot about the Universe that we don’t see. It’s literally showing us what is invisible to us,” he says.
