New survey reveals 33 per cent of Indians say lack of quality time is biggest challenge in their relationship

There was a time when relationship problems were blamed on fading romance poor communication or a lack of intimacyToday the problem may be far more ordinary there simply arenrsquot enough hours in the day Between deadlines commutes household responsibilities social obligations and the constant buzz of smartphones couples may be spending more time managing life than actually experiencing it togetherFindings from Gleedenrsquos latest study on relationships conducted in partnership with IPSOS point towards this growing ldquotime povertyrdquo as an increasingly important challenge for Indian couples The research examines how Gen Z Millennials and Gen X approach relationship satisfaction expectations and infidelityBooked busy and barely togetherThe numbers tell a revealing story 33 per cent of respondents identify worklife balance and lack of quality time as a key relationship challenge making it the biggest challenge highlighted in the study In other words the modern relationship may not always be competing with another person it is competing with the calendar The problem cuts across generations although other pressures differ The study finds that 33 per cent of Gen Z and 37 per cent of Gen X respondents struggle with unrealistic images of happy couples portrayed through movies and social media while Millennials appear relatively less affected by this pressureThe relationship is fine excepthellipPerhaps the most interesting contradiction emerges when Indians are asked how happy they actually are An overwhelming 94 per cent describe themselves as happy in their current relationships while 84 per cent say they are sexually satisfied Scratch beneath the surface however and the picture becomes more complicated Only 25 per cent say nothing is missing from their relationship Among the gaps respondents identify 51 per cent cite emotional connection 44 per cent better communication 42 per cent excitement and thrill and 38 per cent physical intimacy That means a relationship can technically be ldquohappyrdquo and still leave people wanting more In fact the study notes that 75 per cent feel they lack at least one of emotional connection communication excitement or intimacyForget the bedroom check the screen timeInterestingly sex itself does not emerge as the defining ingredient of a healthy relationship None of the surveyed groups placed physical intimacy first when defining one Instead the findings suggest that digital distractions pose a more serious threat to relationship stability while Millennials and Gen Z place greater importance on mutual trust and freedom and Gen X shows a stronger desire for intimacy and emotional connection This changes the conversation around relationship neglect The issue may not necessarily be how much couples love one another but whether they have enough uninterrupted attention left to express itWhen lsquoWe Timersquo becomes a luxuryAccording to Sybil Shiddell Country Manager Gleeden India ldquoWe often associate relationship dissatisfaction with dramatic issues such as incompatibility intimacy or infidelity but increasingly the real challenge is much simpler people are exhausted and stretched for time When individuals struggle to create space for themselves creating meaningful time for a partner becomes even harder Emotional connection requires presence conversation and curiosity all of which suffer when couples are constantly rushing from one responsibility to another The findings show that relationships today may not necessarily be facing a shortage of love but a shortage of undistracted timerdquoAnd that shortage can have consequences 46 of respondents say they have frequently thought about having an affair rising to 54 per cent among Gen XLove may need a calendar inviteThe emerging relationship crisis therefore may be less about falling out of love and more about running out of bandwidth When quality time becomes another item squeezed between meetings errands and notifications emotional distance can grow quietly For modern Indian couples protecting a relationship may increasingly mean protecting time itself because sometimes the biggest third wheel in a relationship isnrsquot another person Itrsquos an overcrowded schedule
