A new Broadway-style musical titled ‘Kaneez’ is set to premiere at the Jamshed Bhabha Auditorium in Mumbai on November 28 and 29. Directed by theatre veteran Randhir Ranjan Roy, this production weaves a narrative exploring profound themes of love and societal constraints within a divided society.

The musical draws inspiration from the real-life story of Tanno Bai, a celebrated courtesan in 1920s from Patna, and her devoted admirer, the ritualistic priest Dharikshan Tiwari. Their relationship challenged the social divisions of caste and class at the time. The musical revisits this historical account through a contemporary theatrical lens, examining how love endures despite social constraints.
