RJ Mitte was born as Roy Frank Mitte III on August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi. After being delivered via an emergency caesarean section, he was not breathing at the time of his birth, which resulted in permanent brain damage (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy).

Mitte was adopted a few weeks later by Roy Frank Mitte Jr. and Dyna Mitte, who later separated when he was two months old.

At the age of three, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and was fitted with leg braces throughout much of his childhood.

Over time, his body became stronger through sports and exercise and he no longer needed any walking devices by the time he reached his teenage.

Mitte was raised by his mother after his parents' separation. However, when his mother became paralyzed, Mitte assumed financial responsibility for his family at the age of 13, which also included his 2-year-old sister.

After receiving roles as an extra, including in the Disney teen sitcom Hannah Montana, he decided to take acting lessons. Shortly after, he was offered the role of Walter White Jr., a character who also has cerebral palsy, in Breaking Bad.

Mitte was called an "overnight fashion sensation" by Dazed and Confused Magazine for his modeling and runway work.

Miite got engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Kennedy Suarez, at a fundraising gala.

The 34-year-old served as a celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, and acted as a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) spokesman for actors with disabilities.

He even led The Mitte Foundation to support community initiatives in Brownsville, Texas.
