RBI MPC: RBI hikes repo rate to 5.5 per cent; rules out rate cuts in near term

This is the first time since February 2023 that the apex bank has increased the rates. The RBI has kept the repo rate unchanged for four consecutive policy meetings at 5.25 per cent, since December 2025

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday increased its repo rate by 25 basis points, its first rate hike for the first time since February 2023, amid geopolitical uncertainties and inflationary pressures. 

The apex bank further said that given the current conditions, rate cuts are off the table in the near term and changed its policy stance to 'calibrated tightening'.
