<p>Banks in Mumbai will remain open on Friday, September 4, despite the observance of <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/web-stories/janmashtami-2026-5-things-to-know-about-the-festival-8332" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Janmashtami</a>. The banks in Maharashtra will also remain open for operation.</p>
<p>However, banks across several states in the country will remain closed on account of Janmashtami, as the festival is part of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar for September.</p>
<h2>States where the banks would be closed</h2>
<p>According to the RBI website, banks will remain closed on account of Janmashtami (Vaishnva) (Shravan Vad-8)/Krishna Jayanthi. <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/business/business-news/article/are-banks-open-on-janmashtami-and-ganesh-chaturthi-heres-a-list-of-bank-holidays-in-september-23647763" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">The states where the branches would be closed</a> are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Online banking to remain open</h2>
<p>While the physical branches will remain closed for operations, customers can use online banking systems for transaction purposes. Customers can also use Unified Interface Payments (UPI) or transact through their bank apps. For cash withdrawals, Automated Teller Machines (ATMS) can be used as these remain fully functional during bank holidays.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Janmashtami and its significance</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.mid-day.com/lifestyle/culture/article/janmashtami-2024-tracing-lord-krishnas-diverse-roles-and-relevance-of-his-timeless-lessons-in-todays-india-23380647" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Janmashtami</a>, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, marks the birth, or appearance, of Lord Krishna, one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. It is observed on the eighth day, or Ashtami tithi, of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. The festival is particularly significant in the Vaishnava tradition and is celebrated with prayers, devotional singing, fasting, temple rituals and midnight festivities.</p>
<p>For devotees, Janmashtami is not simply a festival commemorating a religious event. It is also an occasion for prayer, devotion, and spiritual reflection. Many devotees observe a fast, spend time in prayer and chanting, listen to stories about Lord Krishna.</p>
<p>Janmashtami preparations also include traditional decorations and offerings associated with Lord Krishna&rsquo;s childhood. Homes and temples are often decorated with flower garlands, rangolis and miniature displays, or jhankis, depicting episodes from Lord Krishna&rsquo;s early life. Idols of Laddu Gopal, the infant form of Lord Krishna, are placed on small decorated swings, or jhulas, as part of the celebrations.</p>
<p>The midnight celebration is among the most distinctive features of Janmashtami. According to tradition, Lord Krishna was born at midnight in Mathura. Devotees therefore gather at temples across the country late at night for prayers and rituals that culminate around the time associated with his birth to offer special prayers.</p>
