Israel and Lebanon agree to US-backed ceasefire amid wider regional tensions

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a US-mediated ceasefire aimed at reducing hostilities along the border. While Lebanese President Joseph Aoun welcomed the deal, Israel signalled it would continue strikes for now. Meanwhile, fresh Israeli attacks in Gaza reportedly killed nine Palestinians

Israel and Lebanon agreed to implement a new ceasefire after US-mediated talks, the Trump administration said, raising hopes for progress toward ending the wider US-Israeli war with Iran.

Tehran has made a ceasefire in Lebanon a condition for any peace deal with Washington, and has suggested that it could intervene directly in support of Hezbollah if Israel keeps up or escalates attacks there.
