The police have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with three cases of chain snatching in Maharashtra's <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-175-more-packets-containing-charas-found-at-beaches-in-raigad-in-two-weeks-say-police-23308493" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Raigad district</a>, police said on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.
The accused Nikhil Pandurang Mhatre, was arrested from <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/maharashtra-man-arrested-for-allegedly-killing-wife-and-dumping-her-body-in-forest-23309248" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Karanjade village</a>, and 124 gm of gold, worth Rs 6.2 lakh, was recovered from him, an official said, reported PTI.
Three cases under section 392 (robbery) have been registered against Mhatre, who has been remanded to police custody for three days, he said, reported PTI.
The accused was allegedly involved in three chain-snatching incidents that took place in different parts of the district, the official said, reported PTI.
In another incident, the police created a traffic jam to apprehend two men involved in eight cases of chain snatching in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Monday, reported PTI.
The accused Waris Miraj Khan (24) and Mohammad Jaffar Qureshi (30) were apprehended by the police near Dombivili on October 27, said Sunil Kurade, assistant commissioner of police (Dombivili division), reported PTI.
The duo had robbed a school teacher on October 20. The police registered an offence under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code and based on intelligence inputs, zeroed in on them, he said, reported PTI.
Based on a tip-off, the police laid a trap at three locations and purposely delayed traffic after spotting the accused on a motorcycle, the official said, reported PTI.
The accused abandoned the motorbike and were about to flee the spot when the police team overpowered them, he said Gold worth Rs 8.18 lakh was recovered from the duo involved in eight cases of chain snatching, senior inspector Ashok Honmane said, reported PTI.
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly beating his 40-year-old sister to death and injuring her teenage son in Thane city of Maharashtra, police said, reported PTI.
According to police, the accused Sanju Lokhande was angry with his sister for scolding his 10-year-old son and trying to beat him over a domestic issue, reported PTI.
He allegedly attacked his sister Durga Anil Kunte, a resident of a chawl in the Kokani Pada area, with an iron pipe on Saturday evening and injured her 14-year-old son, Yash, a police spokesperson said, reported PTI.
The police arrested Lokhande in the early hours of Sunday under sections 302 (Punishment for murder) and 307 (attempted murder) of the Indian Penal Code, an official said, reported PTI.
