One of the accused in a Mulund case has, in a complaint to the Home Minister, police Commissioner, claimed cops exceeded their jurisdiction because of political pressure u00a0 The Worli police have found themselves in a soup after a complaint was filed against them for overreaching their jurisdiction allegedly at the behest of a former state home minister. In a first-of-its-kind occurrence, the Worli police not only registered a case against, but also arrested five people including a 72-year-old for an offence that took place in Mulund. On September 3, the Worli police registered an FIR against and arrested Vijay Kale (55), Chaturbhuj Patel (55), Uttam Shah (47), Sunderji Bhanushali (51) and Somnath Pimparia (72) on charges of cheating and forgery. u00a0 According to the complainant, Bharat Ramji Thakkar, they had attempted to redevelop the Jalaram market in Mulund by forging documents. In his complaint against the Worli police (copy with MiD DAY), Patel, one of the accused, has pointed out that the market is in Mulund, the complainant is a Mulund resident and so are all the accused and yet, the case was registered by the Worli police. He filed the complaint before the home minister, police commissioner, Human Rights Commission and the charity commissioner, among others, on December 20. 'Upar se phone aaya' Assistant police inspector Vinod N Gaonkar of the Worli police, who registered the FIR, said that he was not in favour of registering the complaint himself, as tapes available with MiD DAY can confirm. u00a0 "Par upar se phone aaya tha," he told this correspondent. "I have no shop in the market. I am not a member of any association. I wished to develop the market only after getting an offer letter from the market's association. How can the police arrest me on charges of forging documents?" asked Patel. Later, however, Gaonkar retracted his comments and said, "I completed all legal formalities before registering the FIR. There was no pressure on me." When Thakkar was contacted, he said, "We have never put any pressure on the police. The matter is under investigation. The accused have cheated the charity commissioner."
